WorldWideEnergy.org (WWE) is a gateway that makes it easy to search a wide range of energy-related, primarily technically-focused, research information found in targeted deep web databases and open websites from around the globe. Using translation tools, WWE allows users to enter searches in their native language and find results across other languages. While WWE is still in its infancy, many of the resources it searches are well established. Currently four languages are supported for searching, but this number could be expanded with additional participation/support. WorldWideEnergy is produced by several of the former Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDE) participating countries: Germany, Sweden, and the United States. Additional participants are welcomed

What type of information is available?
WWE searches over 1,000 resources. Two of its main databases are the largest collections of multi-national energy-related research results anywhere: the former ETDE cooperation’s World Energy Base (ETDEWEB) and the International Nuclear Information System (INIS) collection, which is still growing. Key portals searched include Reegle, focusing on all types of information content related to clean energy; Esp@cenet, providing worldwide patent information; the European Union’s bookshop; and hundreds of country-specific websites and portals that pull in additional types of energy-related information, including statistics, energy policy, demonstration programs, lessons learned, etc.
How does WorldWideEnergy work?
WWE uses a federated search model, with built-in translation capabilities. Federated search means that many specific resources are searched simultaneously. WWE includes key databases, portals, and websites identified by WWE participants. The user can set their language of choice, and the search terms are automatically translated prior to the query. The user gets back information even from resources that may be in a language other than their own. Current languages supported (using Microsoft® Translator) are: English, Spanish, German, and Swedish.
While many of the sources are searched “live,” some of the sources are pre-indexed monthly to speed up search times. The frequency of this indexing can be done more often, if warranted.
What are the benefits of WorldWideEnergy?
WWE’s key advantages over a typical internet search engine include pre-focused content, translation on search capability, real-time searching for much of the content, filtering/grouping of results, and an alerts option.
