History

Saint Columba Parish in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, was established in 1859, making it one of the older Catholic parishes in Columbia County. The parish's inception was during a time when Catholic immigrants, particularly from Ireland and Germany, were contributing to the area's growth, especially with the construction of the North Branch Canal and the railroads. The first church was dedicated under the patronage of Saint Columba by Father Edward Murray, who took charge of the "country station" in 1857.[1]

The parish initially operated as a mission from St. Joseph's Church in Danville, with services held in various temporary locations until the acquisition of a stone church from the "American Primitive Methodist Sect." Over the years, Saint Columba has seen numerous changes, including the construction of new church buildings to accommodate the growing congregation. The current church was built in the early 20th century, reflecting the parish's development and commitment to its mission.[2]

Saint Columba has been a central part of Bloomsburg's religious life, offering regular Masses, sacraments, and community services. The parish once had a school, Saint Columba Catholic School, which served the community for 70 years before closing. The parish continues to focus on religious education through its CYE (Catholic Youth Education) Program, ensuring the faith education of the youth.[3]

The parish is known for its community involvement, including the Winterfest event and various ministries that engage both parishioners and the broader community in Bloomsburg. Saint Columba also serves as the center for the Bloomsburg University Catholic Campus Ministry, providing spiritual support to students.[4]

Over the years, Saint Columba has had numerous pastors, with each contributing to the parish's spiritual and communal life. The parish remains an active beacon of faith in Bloomsburg, hosting events, offering support during seasonal times like Lent, and engaging in outreach and evangelization.[5]
