History
Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was established in 1901 by Bishop John W. Shanahan to serve the growing Catholic population in the eastern part of the city. The parish was named after Saint Francis of Assisi, reflecting the ideals of humility, poverty, and love for all creation that he embodied. The church was initially built to cater to the needs of diverse ethnic groups in Harrisburg, particularly those from Irish, Italian, and Polish backgrounds.[1]
The first church was constructed in 1902 on Market Street, where it remains today. Over the years, Saint Francis of Assisi has undergone various renovations and expansions to accommodate its congregation. The parish has been a significant part of Harrisburg's Catholic community, known for its commitment to social justice, community service, and cultural diversity.[2]
Saint Francis of Assisi has a rich history of outreach, including the operation of a soup kitchen since 1981, which serves thousands of meals annually to those in need. This reflects the spirit of Saint Francis, emphasizing service to the poor and marginalized. The parish also has a strong focus on multiculturalism, offering Masses in both English and Spanish, recognizing the diverse linguistic needs of its parishioners.[3]
Although the parish once operated a school, it no longer does so but continues to engage in religious education through programs aimed at children and adults. Saint Francis of Assisi also plays a role in cultural preservation, celebrating various ethnic traditions and events that enrich the community's spiritual and social life.[4]
The parish has had a number of pastors, each contributing to its growth and outreach. The current church building reflects a blend of traditional architecture with elements that cater to the diverse community it serves. Saint Francis of Assisi remains a vibrant part of Harrisburg's religious landscape, committed to living out the Gospel in a tangible way through service, worship, and community engagement.[5]
