Virginia
Virginia, officially known as the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state located in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas, with Jamestown established in 1607. It was one of the original 13 colonies and played a pivotal role in American history, from colonial times through the American Revolution and the Civil War.
Virginia became a state on May 15, 1776, though it was part of the Union ratification process leading to its full statehood recognition.
Catholic Church
Virginia's relationship with the Catholic Church has evolved significantly since the colonial period when Catholicism was not the dominant religious force due to the presence of the Anglican Church as the established church. Initially, Catholicism in Virginia faced restrictions during the colonial era when the Church of England was predominant. However, post the American Revolution, religious freedom increased, allowing for the growth of Catholic communities.
Dioceses
The Catholic Church in Virginia is primarily divided into two dioceses:
Diocese of Arlington
The Diocese of Arlington covers the northern part of Virginia.
Diocese of Richmond
The Diocese of Richmond covers the rest of Virginia. This diocese includes historical churches like St. Peter's Church in Richmond, which predates the American Revolution.
