The National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS) was established as a collaborative effort between the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). NICS was created to provide high-performance computing resources, facilitate transformational scientific discoveries, and support research in various scientific and engineering disciplines. Its mission included advancing computational science by offering leadership-class computing resources to researchers from around the world.
Facilities
Kraken
Kraken is one of the flagship systems at NICS was Kraken, a Cray XT5 system that was once ranked as one of the world's fastest supercomputers. Kraken provided a significant computational resource for open science.
Nautilus
Nautilus is an SGI Altix UV 1000 system, Nautilus was part of UT's Center for Remote Data Analysis and Visualization (RDAV), offering capabilities for data-intensive computing.
