The North American Wind Energy Academy (NAWEA) is a volunteer organization working to overcome the challenges of advancing wind power technology and its applications, optimizing its role in meeting the region's energy needs in an environmentally sustainable manner, while nurturing the development and education of future generations of technical, management, and policy experts to ensure the continued sustainable advancement and optimization of wind power.
It brings together researchers, educators, policymakers, and industry members to form collaborative partnerships. These partnerships work to advance research, provide educational opportunities for the essential workforce, and disseminate unbiased information to facilitate market acceptance and energy policy development for wind energy to become the predominant provider of North America's carbon-free electricity by 2050.
It was suggested by two National Renewable Energy Laboratory employee in A Vision for a North American Wind Energy Academy.

This project is funded in part by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Two NREL engineers driving its creation were Paul Veers (Chief Engineer) and Robert Thresher (Research Fellow).
