Mother Mary Angelica of the Annunciation, commonly known as Mother Angelica, was a Roman Catholic American nun, best known for founding the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN).

Born as Rita Antoinette Rizzo on April 20, 1923, in Canton, Ohio, she had a challenging childhood but found her calling in religious life.

She grew up in a time of economic hardship, and her parents divorced when she was young, which was quite stigmatized at the time. She suffered from various health issues, which played a significant role in her spiritual journey. After experiencing what she described as a miraculous healing, she entered the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration, a Franciscan order, in Cleveland in 1944, later moving to establish a new monastery in Irondale, Alabama.

EWTN

In 1981, from a modest start in a monastery garage, she launched EWTN, which grew to become one of the largest religious media networks in the world. EWTN broadcasts Catholic-themed programming, including Mass, devotions, talk shows, and news.

Death

She passed away on March 27, 2016, Easter Sunday. Her legacy lives on through EWTN, the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, and Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Hanceville, Alabama. She is also remembered for her writings and recorded teachings which continue to inspire Catholics around the world.
