Birmingham, Alabama, often referred to simply as Birmingham, is a city known for its rich history, cultural significance, and as a center of civil rights movement activities in the United States. Established in 1871, Birmingham was named after the industrial city in England. Its location, where the mineral-rich regions of Alabama met, led to rapid industrial growth, earning it the nickname "The Magic City" for its quick development.

It is part of the Diocese of Birmingham.

Catholic history

The Catholic presence in Alabama dates back to the 18th century with French and Spanish missionaries, but Birmingham's Catholic history really begins with the city's establishment in the late 19th century. The first Catholic church in Birmingham was St. Paul's, established in 1872. It served as a cornerstone for the Catholic community in the burgeoning city.
